📊 Slay the Spire 2 — Meta Analysis (Patch 0.4.2, June 2026)
Current Meta Snapshot
Slay the Spire 2's Early Access meta is still being shaped, but clear patterns have emerged from community data and top player streams. This analysis is based on A20 win rate data collected from the STS2 community Discord, Twitch streams of top players (Baalorlord, Jorbs, and others), and our own testing. Expect volatility — Early Access balance patches can shift the meta overnight.
Character Tier List (A20 Win Rates)
| Rank | Character | Est. A20 Win Rate | Best Build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | Ironclad | 35-40% | Exhaust Engine (Corruption) | Medium |
| A | Silent | 30-35% | Poison Stacking | Medium-Hard |
| A | Defect | 25-30% | Frost Focus Engine | Hard |
| B | Necrobinder | 20-25% | Minion Army | Very Hard |
Ironclad — The King of Consistency
The Ironclad remains the strongest A20 character in STS2 Early Access, just as he was in the original game. His combination of Burning Blood sustain, the Corruption + Dark Embrace + Feel No Pain trinity, and the new Bleed mechanic gives him the most viable build paths and the highest floor. A bad Ironclad run can still win because Feed + Reaper provide so much sustain. A good Ironclad run becomes untouchable because Corruption exhausts your entire deck into victory.
What's changed in STS2: The Bleed mechanic (Hemorrhage, Blood Pact) adds a viable fourth archetype that didn't exist before. The Hemorrhage build is particularly strong against the new Act 2 enemies, which tend to have high HP pools where Bleed's damage-over-time shines. Blood Pact is currently under evaluation — at 10/14 Bleed for 1 energy and 3 HP, it might be the most efficient damage-per-energy card in the game, but the HP cost keeps it balanced.
Silent — Poison Supreme
The Silent's Poison build continues to be her most reliable path to A20 victory. Catalyst + Corpse Explosion solves both single-target and multi-enemy fights. The new Shadow Strike card (2-cost, deal 12 damage, if the enemy is Poisoned, deal double) gives her a burst option that Poison decks previously lacked. Noxious Fumes remains one of the best Powers in the game — 2/3 poison per turn to all enemies, passively, for 1 energy, is unmatched value.
Her Shiv and Discard builds are viable but more situational. Shiv spam struggles against Time Eater (card limit) and requires Accuracy + Wrist Blade to scale at A20. Discard cycling has the highest ceiling but the lowest floor — Tactician and Reflex are dead draws if you can't discard them, and the engine can fail when you need it most. The Shadow Strike card has interesting implications for hybrid builds — it rewards taking even a small amount of poison alongside Shiv or Discard tools.
Defect — Frost or Die
The Defect is more polarized than ever in STS2. Frost Focus (Glacier + Defragment + Biased Cognition) is essentially mandatory at A20 — the Defect lacks the HP pool and innate sustain to survive without a Frost wall. The Supercharge card (1-cost Skill, evoke your next orb twice) is a strong addition that gives Frost builds a burst option, but the Defect's core problem remains: he needs too many specific pieces to function, and missing any one of them can end a run.
Lightning Storm and Power Spam builds exist but have significantly lower A20 win rates — they're viable through A15 but fall off hard at A17+ where enemy damage outpaces their slower setup. Claw decks remain a meme, though they finally have a small boost from Supercharge (evoking Lightning to clear hallway fights while you build Claw stacks). The Defect benefits most from the new Act 1 event "Spire's Bargain" — trading HP for a rare relic can occasionally high-roll into a Data Disk or Inserter that defines the run.
Necrobinder — Promising but Unpolished
The Necrobinder is exciting but inconsistent. Her Minion Army build has the highest floor and is the recommended starting point for learning. The Shadow Sacrifice build, while flashy, is too fragile for A20 — one bad draw order and you've spent 15 HP for nothing. The community is actively experimenting with hybrid builds that combine elements of both — using minions for consistent damage while banking Shadow for boss fights. Dark Ritual appears to be her most important card, performing a similar role to Defragment for the Defect.
Expect significant balance changes as Early Access progresses. The current consensus is that the Necrobinder needs either more starting HP, a stronger starting relic, or a buff to her card pool to compete at the highest Ascension levels. Her win rate will likely rise as players develop more refined strategies. For now, she's best enjoyed as a fun alternative rather than a competitive A20 pick.
Patch 0.4.2 Balance Changes
The June 2026 patch brought several notable changes:
- Hemorrhage buff: Damage increased from 6/8 to 8/10, Bleed stacks increased from 3/4 to 4/5. This pushes the Bleed build from B-tier to A-tier and makes Hemorrhage a premium Act 1 pickup even outside dedicated Bleed decks.
- Supercharge (Defect) adjusted: Cost increased from 0 to 1, but now evokes the next TWO orbs instead of one. Net buff for decks that set up multiple orbs.
- Shadow Bolt (Necrobinder) buffed: Base damage increased from 5/7 to 7/10. Makes the Necrobinder's Act 1 significantly more consistent.
- Ectoplasm (Boss Relic) reworked: Still gives +1 Energy but now you gain NO gold from combat (previously: reduced gold). This is a nerf to shop-heavy pathing with Ectoplasm and makes it a harder pick.
- Sozu changes: Now reduces potion slots to 1 (down from losing all potion slots). This makes Sozu more viable, as keeping 1 emergency potion is much better than having none.

Different builds perform differently at different Ascension levels. Here's the breakdown:
| Ascension | Ironclad | Silent | Defect | Necrobinder |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A0-A5 | Strength 🥇 | Shiv 🥇 | Lightning 🥇 | Sacrifice 🥇 |
| A6-A10 | Strength 🥇 | Poison 🥇 | Lightning 🥇 | Minion 🥇 |
| A11-A15 | Exhaust 🥇 | Poison 🥇 | Frost 🥇 | Minion 🥇 |
| A16-A19 | Exhaust 🥇 | Poison 🥇 | Frost 🥇 | Minion 🥇 |
| A20 | Exhaust 🥇 | Poison 🥇 | Frost 🥇 | TBD |
Key insight: the meta shifts dramatically at A11 (losing a potion slot) and again at A17-A18 (improved enemy AI). Builds that dominate at low Ascension because they're "fun" often fall apart at high Ascension because they're inconsistent. The Exhaust engine's dominance at A20 isn't because it's the strongest build — it's because it's the most consistent build. Consistency beats power at high Ascension every time.
What's on the Horizon
STS2 Early Access is expected to run through late 2026. Rumored upcoming content includes: a potential 5th character (datamined but unconfirmed), new relics for the Necrobinder, Act 4 (the original game's secret final act), and balance passes on underperforming Defect archetypes. The Bleed mechanic may be expanded to other characters or receive additional support cards for the Ironclad. Follow our updates page for the latest as patches drop.
